About filmmaker

Sarah Dienaar

Sarah Dienaar is a Dutch filmmaker with a passion for storytelling that explores the human experience and our interconnection with the natural world. Her films are more than just stories; they are a call to embrace authenticity, foster connections, and encourage a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Creating 'The Medicine'

“From a young age I have felt very connected to music.  It wasn’t until I used sound and voice as a healing tool myself that I truly experienced it's power. On this journey, I found a deeper, more authentic way to connect with myself and express my inner being.  Leonie Bos's journey feels like a reflection of my own journey as a filmmaker. I have long struggled with a forced need for validation while also keeping myself small. Like me, artists from all kinds might recognize themselves in her story. This aspect makes the story both personal and universal."

"Sarah Dienaar’s film is more than a biographical portrait; it is a work of poetic observation. From the very first shots, it establishes its rhythm through contrasts: silence and song, stillness and movement, fragility and strength. The film’s title, The Medicine, proves not to be metaphorical hyperbole but a lived truth that Leonie embodies. Through the film’s forty minutes, music transforms from a profession into a salvation, and finally into a shared cure."

"The documentary Het Medicijn by Sarah Dienaar captivates and touches deeply. It is about much more than Leonie Bos's story. It reminds us of the power of our inner voice and truth, and how we can connect not only with ourselves, but also with others and the greater whole."

"What makes the film so exceptional is the balance between the personal and the universal. The Medicine is not only about music as medicine; it is about life itself, and how we relate to the inevitable vulnerabilities of being human. Sarah Dienaar and Leonie Bos succeed in creating a deep connection with the viewer through genuine emotion and human relatability."

"What a beautiful documentary, the story touched me deeply. A wonderful way to show how people who don't fit into the rigid system of our education, find ways to carve out a place in society that suits them and where they can thrive. And all of this accompanied by beautiful music. A joy to watch."
